Annie and Tyson are 10 years old and best friends. They play together, pretending to battle aliens and explore distant galaxies. They disagree about whether Mars should be the enemy or ally in their make-believe battle. Tyson argues that Mars and Earth aren't on friendly terms, and that's when Annie reveals she's moving there with her family, leaving Tyson devastated. Tyson sings alone now, mourning the relocation of his best friend. Fast forward 25 years. Tyson, the top Zapper of Waste of Space, greets the new class of Zapper trainees on Orientation Day. He announces that Top of Class will fly with him personally after training is complete. The trainees are played by the 5 members of the chorus and Chuck. They're introduced to two members of Ground Control, Sallie and Yuri; John from Accounting; and The Boss. The Boss explains to the Trainees that world peace on Earth was achieved in the 2060s, and that's when mankind's exploration of space really took off. The other planets of the solar system were colonized. The increase in space activity required the need for waste management in space. A treaty was signed between the planets of the solar system and territories were established. Eventually, the relationship between territories and planets grew hostile. Waste of Space Inc. was established in 2085, representing Earth in the waste management of the cosmos. Fast forward 12 weeks, Chuck wins Top of Class. He and Tyson take off for their first day of zapping space trash. Chuck nails the pre-zap checklist which is important because Tyson is a stickler for protocol; but then struggles at zapping. Tyson demonstrates his technique and gives Chuck a pep talk. Suddenly, systems fail in their ship "TD34," and they lose all comms with HQ. Meanwhile, back at HQ, Sally and Yuri (Ground Control) discuss how Sally's in love with Tyson. She realizes they've lost comms with Tyson and Chuck. They escalate to The Boss who tells them to follow protocol and wait. Sally decides she's going to 1) confess her love to Tyson, and 2) hijack a ship to go looking for TD34 herself because her gut tells her they're in trouble. In the back room of the same ship Sally is about to steal, John from Accounting is taking inventory of parts and supplies. He playfully texts with his wife, Mae, in between tasks. When Sally starts the engines, it startles John who runs to the cockpit and realizes he's about to be a stowaway on a stolen ship. Sallie can't risk him ratting her out and takes off with John in tow. She tries to calm him down (he's never been to space before). Mae makes a phone call to an unknown entity when she realizes her husband's headed for space and says, "We have a problem." After some time looking for TD34, Sallie and John's ship experiences the same system failures that Tyson and Chuck's did. This time, we find out why when their ship is forcefully docked inside of a larger ship that hadn't previously been visible, and they're approached by 3 masked soldiers from Mars. Back at HQ, Yuri realizes he's now lost comms with Sallie's ship as well. He goes to The Boss and confesses Sallie's sin of hijacking a ship, and that there are now 2 missing ships and 4 missing employees. Back to the Mars ship: Tyson, Chuck, Sallie, and John are all locked up in neighboring cells. John's a panicked mess; Chuck is full of rage, ready to fight some Martians; and Sallie is here for the adventure. Tyson gets escorted away from the others and finds himself in a room alone with one of the Martian soldiers. The soldier removes her mask, and Tyson recognizes his childhood friend, Annie. She's a Captain in the Mars Space Force. She's not at liberty to reveal why they've kidnapped Tyson and his colleagues but tells Tyson it's not about waste management territories. They soon arrive at their destination, Pluto, where the Earthlings, especially John, are confused to find John's wife, Mae, among those in the welcome party. Mae confesses that she's a spy who helped orchestrate the kidnapping of Ty and Chuck (and accidental kidnapping of Sallie and John). John is devastated that his entire marriage was a sham. It's finally revealed that the kidnapping was planned in order to start talks of forming a military alliance between planets because a civilization from beyond the solar system was secretly planning an invasion. Ty calls The Boss at Waste of Space, Inc. She and her two soldiers board a flight of their own to join the Pluto rendezvous. Unbeknownst to them, they have a civilian stowaway of their own: Yuri from Ground Control.
